Taunton Adventurous Sports & Canoe Club
TASCC (Taunton Adventurous Sport Canoe Club),was established in early 2009 and is based on the River Tone and run from our canoe store situated in Priory Bridge Car Park, Taunton. School sessions are led by Mat Bawden.  He works for the Partnership as a Specialist Primary Link Teacher supporting Primary school staff in the delivery of PE and as a School Sports Co-ordinator for St Augustine of Canterbury School. He specialises in Canoeing and is qualified as a British Canoe Union Coach.

  • Over 32 children took part in our Easter holidays Canoeing course on the River Tone and in St George's School Swimming Pool.  The highlight for some was an expedition on the River Tone and the Canal. See photos.

    Paddle Power Awards

    An entry level award suitable for taster sessions or as part of a series of sessions.

    Paddlepower Passport
    Four progressive levels based on 24 topics which can be grouped into Safety Awareness, Paddling Skills, Varied Experiences, and Supporting Knowledge. The award is equivalent to 1 Star.

    Paddlepower Discover
    This follows on from Passport with a further 4 levels to take the young paddler to equivalent of 2 star standard.

    Paddlepower Explore
    Three different levels take the paddler on an extensive journey exploring the great variety Paddlesport, with topics focused on participation in events and journeys in the competitive and non-competitive disciplines.

    Paddlepower Excel
    Three levels to test the paddler on all elements of paddlesport including being responsible for self and others, participation in journeys, coaching sessions, training, events/competitions in a variety of disciplines, background knowledge of the sport; access, rules, environmental, nutrition and goal setting.

    UNDERSTANDING PADDLEPOWER LEVELS
    There are twelve levels in the awards. Each level provides progressive steps through
    a range of topics. (A ‘topic’ is a skill or theme: For example ‘forward paddling’ or
    ‘responsibility for self’). This enables a young person to work through each level
    with small achievable steps and allows the coach to reward performance at each level.

    Paddlepower Excel Levels 10 – 12 (Bronze, Silver, Gold)

    In Start, Passport and Discover there are 24 topics to cover:

    Safety Awareness e.g. dealing with a capsize, use of buoyancy aids, warm ups and warm downs, looking after yourself and others, and hygiene
    Paddling Skills e.g. getting in and out, balance, forwards / backwards paddling, stopping, edging, manoeuvring leaning, and recovering
    Varied Experiences e.g. completing a journey, attending sessions, and making links with clubs.
    Supporting Knowledge e.g. environmental awareness, hydration and nutrition, training and practice
