The Huff & Puff initiative was launched in September 2005 with the aid of a ‘BIG LOTTERY’ grant. The aim is to promote physical activity in schools by structuring informal play at lunch and break times. £350 worth of brightly coloured playtime equipment has been provided for every First, Primary and Middle school to enable pupils to participate in a range of traditional and non-traditional games and activities.
The Initiative has been enhanced by the training of 700 playground leaders, who will lead playground games, hand out equipment and buddy individuals in order to create fun, active and safe playgrounds. Over 250 lunchtime supervisors have also been trained to manage the playground leaders and create playground games.
Research evidence from other similar projects has shown that pupils are not only healthier by being physically active but incidents of antisocial behaviour at lunchtime have been significantly reduced. Pupils are also more responsive to study in the afternoon.

We are currently producing a pack of playground game that can be used by young leaders and lunchtime supervisors to promote physical activity.
