altOver 110 young leaders attended a series of National Governing body sports workshops at the Castle and Heathfield School on Friday. The courses in Football, Rugby, Netball, Basketball, Cycling and Boccia were designed to enable the leaders to gain coaching or officiating qualifications so that they can volunteer back in their schools or clubs.

Dave Bullock SASP School Games Organiser for the Taunton and West Somerset area said “As part of the Olympic Legacy the Government have funded the “School Games” with the aim of getting more young people involved in competitive sport organised and run by young people. Yr 3/4 Catchball Gala

Somerset Activity and Sports Partnership 2nd Catchball gala on Wednesday was a great success as 45 Year 3/4 pupils from 5 Primary schools competed at The Castle School.  Catchball is a simplified 5-a-side version of netball, where the aim is to pass the ball to a team mate inside a hoop to score.  For all of the children from Bishops Hull, North Town, Blackbrook, Stoke St Gregory and Wiveliscombe this was their first experience of competitive sport representing their school. As the children got used to the rules and format the standard of play improved.  The atmosphere was fun and friendly with Stoke St Gregory and North Town emerging as the stronger teams on this occasion.

Year 6 Tone Area Football Finals

altThe top 4 teams from both the Heathfield league and the Castle League met on 28th November for the Play-off finals at Heathfield school. Teams were initally split into 2 pools of 4 and played all the teams within their pool, with the top 2 teams from each going through to the semi-finals. One semi-final saw Bishops Hull beat Thurlbear 2-1, and in the other semi-final (Parkfield v Blackbrook) scores were tied at 1-1 leading to a penalty shoot-out. Parkfield eventually emerged as winners beating Blackbrook 6-5 on penalties.

The final also proved to be closely contested, and with the game ending in a draw - Parkfield 0, Bishops Hull 0, another penalty shoot-out took place. Parkfield once again held their nerve and just edged out Bishops Hull with a 6-5 win on penalties, and were awarded the Tone School Sports trophy. Both finalists will now represent the area in the ESFA County competition on 13th January at Bridgwater College.
